Logging and weighing of incoming fiber is
an easier process with a few simple tips for our customers:
1. Please mark each bag clearly with the name of the animal the fiber was
sheared from. Shearing day is stressful for everyone, we always pre-label
the bags with animals names and which cuts they will contain the night before.
2. Make sure to label which cut the bag contains, for example 1st, 2nd, 3rd
or 1st, and 2nd and 3rd if you combine your 2nd and 3rd cuts. Don't forget
to let the bag breath, the usual plastic bags if closed too tightly will retain
moisture and could ruin fiber, especially if stored for any lengthy period of
time. So, just tie loosely.
3. The most important task for the customer (because it cuts cost to you!) is
to pick any hay or other vegetable matter from the fiber. You can use the
"wand" to flick the fiber from the animal prior to shearing and also clean any
remaining fiber by hand from the sheared fiber prior to bagging.

Never wash, shampoo or condition fiber at home! All Alpaca Fiber Mill
does this professionally as part of our service. Animals can be hosed with
plain water the day before shearing if you'd like, this can help reduce sand or
dirt from rolling "dusting" as long as they are dry when it comes time to shear.
Remember you never want to store damp fiber.

Washer
The washing system is the initial step in fiber processing and crucial to
producing the highest quality products. The fiber is taken through a long
or short cycle depending on wash preferences. Our professional
washer has it's own water source and heater. Up to three batches
can be washed together without any cross contamination. It features an
automatic soap injector and an external recycling tank with a temperature
controlled heating unit.
